Movies & DVD – 24 Season 6

28 10 2007

A visit to a local music store during lunch yielded a surprise find – the much coveted 24 Season 6 DVD boxset!!! Within seconds, my hands were all over it, my eyes scanning every inch of the box. It’s good to see Chloe, Bill and Jack again! To m, it’s really Day 1 of a thrilling ride through another 24 season. Excited, I called Mrs SWFToys to tell her of my find. Since Season 1, Mrs SWFToys has been transformed into a big fan of the series. “Oh really? Yeahhhhh!!!! We can watch 24 again!” was her exhilarated response.

Movies & DVD – Battlestar Galactica Season 1

4 09 2007

It’s the time of the year when waiting for the DVD release of the next 24 season gets easier. I remembered the same feeling last year as I awaited my favourite TV series… ever. The difference this year, however, is that while Emmy awards lauded on Season 5 heralded its coming, Season 6 seems to have taken a beating in fans’ opinions. While nervously awaiting facing the prospect of a “terrible 24 Season” for the first time, I picked up the Season 1 of Battlestar Galactica to ease the pain. I’ve heard of this title for some time but it being sci-fi made it hard for me to pick it up. I just didn’t think I’ll find anything new in this genre that Star Wars did not cover. Well, after finishing all 13 episodes (and the miniseries), here’s my assessment.

Movies & DVDs – Sideshow Transformer Movie Review

21 06 2007

The Transformers movie is round the corner and I was fortunate enough to spy a review on Sideshow’s website. Be wary though, there are spoilers in it which they have stated right at the start of the review. However, if you have the same spoiler-avoiding reading skill as me (mine developed and trained from skipping 24 spoilers on the FOX website!), you’ll get to enjoy the delicious pics and the bottomline every Transformers fan will want to know before we hit the final lap to the movie’s opening!

Movies & DVDs – The Unit Season 1 DVD

19 06 2007

It’s another 5 months before I can lay my hands on the latest 24 DVD and in the meantime, I’ve tracked Dennis Haysbert to the CBS 2006 TV series – The Unit. Lasting 13 episodes in 4 DVDs, it illustrates the lives and… wives of the members of a covert government force known simply as The Unit. Although very highly trained, these men know that an operation gone awry could see them dead or if alive, will see their government deny their affiliation.

Movies & DVDs – Transformers: The Movie (20th Anniversary DVD)

12 03 2007

Transformers The Movie

Spotted this DVD during one of my rounds at my favourite local DVD store. With the excitement generated by the up-coming live action Transformers movie, I decided to plonk some of my DVD dollar on Transformers: The Movie (20th Anniversary DVD). Unlike the Michael Bay movie, this is an animated movie out of the 1980s. It’s 1986 to be exact. And I must admit that I’ve never watched it before!

Besides curiosity concerning the Transformers lore beyond my more familiar G1 TV cartoon series, the fact that the 20th Anniversary DVD comes with those 1980s toy commercials really helped in my buying decision. Those commercials were one of the biggest plus points for buying this newly packaged DVD. It’s a journey back in time to view those Hasbro commercials of that era that made every kid want to get a piece of those transforming plastic! Somehow, we were able to translate the Autobots and Decepticons in the cartoon into those Hasbro toys. Let me explain.

Movies & DVDs – Gamera The Brave (2006)

25 02 2007

Gamera The Brave

I was hunting for some DVDs at a store during the recent holidays when I spotted the words ‘G-A-M-E-R-A’ on a particular DVD. It struck a cord with me because I had always remembered seeing a movie in my childhood that had a giant turtle battling monsters of equal gigantic proportions. I believe the movie was voiced over in Mandarin and the turtle that saved the day was know as ‘Shen Gui’ or ‘Turtle God’… if you translate it literally. As such, I had never known that turtle by its Japanese name of Gamera.

That was until several months back when I started to do some digging to find out the title of that movie I watched as kid then. With Wikipedia these days, I was able to associate confidently the name Gamera to the giant turtle from the fragments of the movie I recollected from my memory.

What got me searching was the desire to re-watch that particular movie which I remembered was rather touching. I think I cried in the theatre then. But my search landed me several Gamera movies spanning from the 1960s to the 1990s. I’ve narrowed the possibilities to the 1980s period. And since the only Gamera movie then is Gamera Super Monster from 1980, this is most probably the Gamera movie I am after. Now, I’d just have to get my hands on one!
